May 25, 2011 · Hi just purchased a CA89 off a member here and it has an odd (to me) serial # of BXX 020. I tried a search and didn't find any info on how CA serializes their stuff. Did I get a low # pistol, or does the three letter prefix "Bxx" act as sort of a date code? Love to get some insight. BTW - I love this pistol. Much better quality than I expected. I have two N frames, both are 327's (model 27's with the "3" prefix means scandium framed) of the 5 inch flavor and are fantastic shooters. Maintain it properly and the 28 will outlast you, by quite a bit. A couple of letters tacked to the end of the model name might mean something minor like a new finish, but they can also indicate major changes like the “TSW” (Tactical Smith & Wesson) series of pistols which indicate the addition of features like improved sights and accessory rails.

There are several combinations which start with "BA", but "BAD" is not among them. Not much information to go on. S&W made many .32 revolvers. Some with a tip-up action, or top break action and others with a swing-out cylinder. Knowing which type it is and other markings could help identify the model and the date of manufacture....In 1980, S&W began using a 3 letter, 4 digit serial number (AAA1111, for example) sequence for their firearms.
