Main problem is when running on transition slots and idle ,i.e in the pits or traffic from a stop light at very lite throttle or behind someone who has the nerve to go the speed limit and this puts me in the 2100 to 2500 rpm range in 1st or 2nd gear .

two issues with the Holley 1850 600 CFM carb. First, it's 600 CFM which may not be a problem. 600 CFM is good to around 300 HP (gross) before it becomes a limiting factor. 2 CFM per HP is a good rule of thumb for a square bore Holley. The bigger problem is it is a 4160 model carb with side hung floats. 4160's were made for one reason, I m with Rich on this. I never have understood the different series of Holley carbs. When I enter the 8007 number that is stamped on the carb on the Holley web site it always shows as a 350 CFM but I agree visually it looks identical to the 4150. It's the holley that is running rich. Not dogging Holleys, I love them. Just needs to be jetted down. They are jetted rich from the factory. However, I would also try running in the idle mixture screws. My guess is they are too far out. Try them 2 1/4- 2 1/2 turns out from fully seated and go from there.

BTW regarding the engine surge at low rpm (yeah i know, the rear gears), it goes extremely rich (<10) when doing that. I don't know if it surges because it is rich, or it is so rich because it doesn't burn all the fuel. At WOT it is running rich (around 10-12) too. Please help, walk me through some tests or steps or something, i'm lost. Again right out of the box the Holley started up and performed well although burning rich due to the 7500ft altitude. On the Holley Truck Avenger, I went 4 stages lean on the primaries and 3 on the secondaries. Other than that, I went to the factory supplied lighter vacuum spring (not a good idea if you still have a 302ci engine).
