Wondering if you guys can help me diagnose intermittent white smoke coming out of my exhaust. Revo stage 2, car has 80k. Downpipe and intake and otherwise stock. No check engine light, no codes, no leaking oil or coolant, no overheating, heat works good. Car drives fine. started about 3 weeks ago in a fast food drive thru. When started cold the truck blows a lot of white smoke that doesn't have much much of a typical diesel exhaust smell to it and doesn't really have much fuel smell either. It will continue to idle white. If you pop the throttle you will get black smoke and then back to white. Dec 05, 2012 · another possible cause of white smoke at idle is a bad FPR or fuel pressure regulator. its located in the valley on the injection pump. not the most fun to change but they are cheaper than injectors! if you balance rates spec out it may be worth some time to test that part out. either way its a duramax and i'd just keep driving it until it gets worse, that way you can better identify the problem. Mar 15, 2010 · A sticking piston and needle will cause wild amounts of white or black smoke and noise when the injector dumps far more fuel than that cylinder can handle. Poor atomization at the nozzle end can also be evident by a white/blue smoke at idle with the engine warm, going away when the engine is under load. The Duramax has a multi-layer steel head gasket. When they have issues, they do not typically smoke out the exhaust or get coolant into the cylinders. What happens is the head lifts a little during the compression stroke. This allows the layers of the gasket to separate which lets combustion pressure into the coolant system.
